Setting Goals for the New Year as a College Student

As we enter the month of December, we are faced with the reality of ourselves transitioning from 2021 into 2022. This year has shed some barriers on us mentally, physically, and socially. However, as a college student, it is important that you set some goals for this new year to come. Below are a few options to consider:

Find Extracurriculars

It is never too late for you to join a student organization! You could either join a club during Spring of 2022 or even at the start of Fall semester. Go to: Involve@State to browse some of the student organizations and events on campus!

Meet New People

Campus is filled with students from such diverse backgrounds. Online learning may have impacted some of our abilities to meet new people, however, you can always try again for this upcoming new year. Here are some common ways that students socialize:

  • Dorm
  • Some campus neighborhoods offer various social events in their residence halls. Attend one of those and meet your fellow neighbors!
  • Online Socials
  • Join your Facebook’s graduating class group where you can post about classes, sports, and much more. This is a great way to become connected with students in the same grade-level as you.

Save Money

We all understand that student-living can sometimes run your expenses. You could set a goal of saving more money this year! Here are some ways to do that:

  • Maintain a Summer job
  • Sell handcrafted items
  • Work a semester job
    • Campus dining
    • Tutoring
    • Mentoring

Get More Sleep

During the semester, a student’s sleep schedule can sometimes be put on the back burner for priorities. However, it is super important that you get at least 7 to 9 hours per night to ensure that you have sustainable energy for your classes. Here are some common methods to acquiring more sleep:

  • Exercise earlier in the day
  • Avoid caffeine in the evening
  • Do not look at electronic devices 1 to 2 hours before bed
  • Create a consistent sleep schedule

Learn a New Skill

No matter what field you decided to pursue, it is always great to learn a new skill. These skills could range from creativity to problem-solving – it is up to you! Here are a few common skills that students aspire to develop:

  • Time Management
    • Following a routine schedule and showing up to work/school/extracurriculars on time
  • Money Management
    • Managing various financial accounts and being responsible with debit/credit cards
  • Leadership
    • Finding your voice and learning how to use it as a leader

All these goals are totally attainable for college students and could help you step-foot in the right direction for 2022. I wish you the best of luck on Final Exams!
