Mentoring

The program is closed for the 2024-2025 academic year. Please check back in Fall 2025 for more information!

About the Program

The Pre-Medical Mentoring program is led through the combined efforts of the College of Natural Science Pre-Health Advising Team and a core team of students from the College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine.

To participate in this program as a mentee, a student must identify as pre-med and must be a current MSU undergraduate student. Mentors must be current MSU medical students.

Program Goals

The Michigan State University Pre-Medical Mentoring Program connects undergraduate pre-med students with medical students from the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The program is committed to facilitating relationships that provide undergraduate students with increased support and guidance, while offering medical students an opportunity for leadership and service to our campus community.

Mentor support and guidance may come in the form of encouragement, advice, anticipation of challenges, and sharing of personal experience related to medical school and the application process. Mentees will benefit from the perspective and insight that a student with more experience can offer.

Structure/Expectations

  • Pre-medical students who sign up for the program will be matched with a volunteer medical student who will provide mentoring on topics of interest to the pre-med student.
  • Mentors and mentees should work together to develop expectations and goals for the academic year.
  • Mentees and mentors may interact face-to-face or electronically and as frequently as they would like (minimum of twice a semester).
  • Active members will be invited to attend large group events led by medical student mentors at least once a semester. Events are held in a virtual format to provide accessible programming for all involved.

Note that mentor relationships are meant to supplement a pre-medical student’s experience and do not replace pre-health advising. Undergraduate students must meet with pre-health advisors to discuss their academic records, available resources, and details of the application process.
