What is the Best Major for Pre-Health Students?
There is no single “best” major for students pursuing a health career. In fact, your major does not play a direct role in the admissions process. Admissions committees focus more on your academic performance, experiences, and competencies than on your major.
You can choose any major! What matters most is that you explore your options and select a field of study you enjoy and where you feel motivated to succeed. While many pre-health students do choose majors in the sciences, this is not a requirement.
To explore majors at MSU, you can:
- Declare the Exploratory Preference major – This allows you to intentionally explore different academic paths while working with an Exploratory Preference Advisor to make a well-informed decision.
- Research major options through MSU Academic Programs– Learn more about the full range of majors offered.
- Meet with a major advisor – If you’re curious about a specific major, current students can schedule a meeting with an advisor in that department to learn about the requirements and opportunities available.
Which Health Profession is Right for Me?
Choosing a healthcare career is a significant commitment, and admissions committees expect you to make this decision thoughtfully. They will want to see that you’ve explored your options and can clearly explain why a particular path is the right fit for you.
Even if you feel confident in your choice, it's valuable to explore a range of health professions. Doing so can help you confirm your interests, strengthen your motivation, and clearly articulate why your chosen career is the best fit.

Gain Exposure to Various Careers:
Reflecting on real experiences is one of the best ways to clarify your goals. Look for opportunities that genuinely interest you and allow you to interact with healthcare environments or professionals. Some great starting points include:
- Job shadowing
- Joining health-related student organizations
- Volunteering or serving in health-related community roles
Exploring different roles and reflecting on what you learn will help you make an informed, confident decision about your future in healthcare.
